Dance of the spittle-flecked Harrys

When we approach the vet’s office, our cat Rocky emits what I call the “Yodel of Despair.” It’s a great musical accompaniment to the Dance of the spittle-flecked Harrys.

If you read the Star Tribune story at the link above, you’ll see that an ‘impasse’ has been reached in negotiations for a special legislative session about gun control. Impasse is a charitable term for what more closely resembles a skunk-stunk dog being dragged toward a tub of hot suds.

If you can work your way through all the mixed metaphors, well, good for you. Go get yourself a cookie.

Harry Niska, the callow leader of the Minnesota House Republicans, hailing from the Twin Cities frontier, wails:

Republicans rejected the proposal that included a slate of GOP priorities, including funding for mental health services and school security. It also would’ve required passage of a ban on assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, which Republicans have opposed.

“It’s become clear, I think, to everyone what should have been obvious from the start — that the governor’s talk of a special session has been a partisan political stunt from the beginning,” House GOP Floor Leader Harry Niska, R-Ramsey, said at a Capitol news conference.

Since the Annunciation shooting, Walz and Republican and Democratic leaders in the Legislature have held a series of discussions to prepare for a possible special session. Democrats, including Walz, have pushed for a ban on assault weapons – or simply a vote on the measure. Niska said no House Republicans are willing to vote for such a ban.

It’s not a stunt, Harry; it’s a demonstration of what a bunch of heartless, gun-sucking morons Republican legislators are. Maybe an assault weapons ban wouldn’t pass, especially in the House, but we’d know why. We could finger the perps. An assault weapons ban is popular with the public; the Republicans know this and are frightened of being exposed.

Republican resistance to a special session highlighting gun control and an assault weapons ban is a continuing refrain, from Wally Hudson, well, on up.
