We need time to be thoughtful

David Hann at anti-bullying rally

Senate GOP leader David Hann shows up at the governor’s presser today on the subject of a tax bill before the Legislature, grabs the microphone (actually, Governor Dayton, gracious host that he is, gave the gate-crashing Hann a chance to speak), and says, We need more time to think about this.

The presser was called to put some pressure on the Lege.

That’s Myron Frans, Minnesota’s Commissioner of Revenue. The urgency is for the reasons set forth in the tweet here.

Remember, though, Sen. Hann and the rest of his caucus think this about fiscal probity in Minnesota.

Senate Taxes Committee Chairman Rod Skoe said he does not want a repeat of the last decade, where the state was locked in cycle of deficits and emergency budget cutting that damaged the state’s credit rating.

“We don’t want to go through that again,” said Skoe, DFL-Clearbrook. “A little bit of caution is in order.”

Republicans oppose building up the reserves, saying the tax money should be in the economy, not sitting in the state’s bank account.

“We are better off letting people keep their money in their pockets,” Hann said.

Aw, what the hell, says Sen. Hann, sitting at the kitchen table, Let’s go to Bermuda. To hell with the roof!
